CES 2015 – Tech To Expect in 2015

CES 2015 – Tech To Expect in 2015

The Consumer Electronics Show kicks off in Las Vegas today, and is expected to spotlight the latest in ultra high-definition television, connected home technology and every other manner of gadgetry.

Next-generation TV’s will be a spotlight this year, like every other year. 4K TVs – so-called for their 4,000 horizontal pixels of resolution, four times that of regular HD – may have an easier time catching on in 2015. Prices have come down by about 85 per cent since the technology was first introduced two years ago In Canada, Future Shop and Best Buy report that 4K was responsible for about 40 per cent of TV purchases during recent Black Friday and September sales.

Streaming company Netflix, which is ramping up its 4K content, is providing limited shows and movies in this ultra high quality but it might be another year or more before cable providers like Bell and Rogers offer this high of quality programming. One thing though to keep in mind when deciding on getting a 4K TV and using a service like Netflix to provide the content is the amount of Internet bandwidth it will take up and so interested users will want to keep a close eye on the amount of bandwidth they are using.

The connected home will also be hyped at CES, with companies touting everything from digital door locks to smart thermostats. Many of the products are heading into their second and third generation, which means many of the bugs have been worked out and they’re easier to use. Smart home monitoring technology like the Google NEST thermostat and Dropcam are two technologies that will allow anyone to control your heat and monitor your house via video live streaming video from any Internet connected device you have.

Wearable technology like sensor-connected fitness socks, smart watches and wrist bands have been out for a while but I would expect to see them mature this year. Many of them will have heat rate monitors in them now with wireless technology to interact with your phone providing live data to an app that you can save and provide to your fitness trainer or doctor. Some of the more popular and stylish fitness watches to look out for this year will be the Pebble Steel, and the new Apple Watch which should debut sometime this spring.

TV manufactures like Samsung are planning on showing off curved Quantom Dot TV’s that will be even higher resolution than 4K and so I would expect this type of TV to make it into homes within the next 5 years.
